As WMI celebrates our 20th anniversary, we find ourselves reflecting on a remarkable journey—one shaped by dedicated supporters, hundreds of scholars and alumni, and thousands of communities transformed through the power of education.

In many ways, this moment feels less like a change and more like a clearer expression of who we have become.
When WMI was founded in 2005, our vision was simple: to help exceptional young people overcome barriers to higher education. We believed that education could unlock opportunity, strengthen communities, and create lasting change.
Over the years, we have witnessed that belief come to life.
We have learned that education alone is not enough. Talented young leaders also need mentorship, professional networks, leadership development, and opportunities to put their knowledge into action. They need sustained support that extends beyond graduation.
As a result, WMI has evolved into a lifelong investment model—one that supports scholars not only as students, but as community leaders and changemakers in their own right.

Today, more than 900 scholars and alumni across 55 countries are creating local solutions to local challenges.
They are launching businesses, strengthening healthcare systems, expanding access to education, creating jobs, and building stronger communities from within.
Our mission remains the same: to advance access to university education, predominantly in Africa, and invest in exceptional scholars and alumni through leadership development and start-up funding as they innovate and lead social change.
Our work had outgrown the way we were telling its story.
What has changed is our ability to communicate the full scope of that work.
Over time, we realized that many people knew WMI primarily as a scholarship organization. While scholarships remain at the heart of our work, they represent only the beginning of a scholar’s journey. Our impact extends far beyond the classroom, and our brand needed to reflect that reality.
