Women can be the grass root leaders – if they are empowered
Make a difference one woman at a time
By: Jagdish Dalal

“Women make up more than two-thirds of the world's 796 million illiterate people. According to global statistics, just 39 percent of rural girls attend secondary school. This is far fewer than rural boys (45 percent), urban girls (59 percent) and urban boys (60 percent)”.
UN Women

There are many factors driving this number: gender bias, religious beliefs, cost, lack of access, poverty. The Pandemic is adding to these numbers on a daily basis. The impact of this lack of education is felt not just by individuals but by their families and society as a whole. For those communities, it means half of their population is discouraged from contributing directly to the betterment of society. A majority of girls and women stop going to school or college, not because they don’t want to but because they are unable to.

Educated women become leaders in their community providing services. Some go on to study medicine and become the only practicing physician in a community lacking access to health care. Some start at home business providing an outlet for their home-based creations. Each of them has an unfulfilled dream, not just for themselves but for their family, community and country. It is just that they lack the resources to pursue that dream.

It is difficult to address all of the underlying factors contributing to this lack of education. But, one of the drivers can be easily with access to funds for schooling. Wells Mountain Initiative’s (WMI) mission is to enable young people to realize their full potential and become leaders in creating the changes they want to see in their communities and, ultimately, the world. We foster social change at the local level by building a global network of grassroots leaders who are catalyzing community transformation across 47 developing countries.

WMI annually awards scholarships to worthy individuals to continue and complete their education in colleges of their choice. Each of the recipients is expected to stay in their community and “payback” through their talent and leadership. Post-graduation, we provide lifelong support, which includes professional development and social entrepreneurship training, community development grants to start and grow their own community projects and businesses, regular in-person conferences, and online webinars and support for in-country scholar

“What is the use of living, if it be not to strive for noble causes and to make this muddled world a better place for those who live in it after we are gone?”
Sir Winston Churchill

While studying in her home country of Malawi to become a nurse, Eluby Mwalwanda volunteers in a local clinic as a midwife. She provides care to antenatal and postnatal mothers, while offering some vital health education and support to them.
