What's Happening at WMI?
Jeanette Iranzi is a fourth-year student from Kamembe City, Rwanda and is studying medicine at the University of Rwanda in Kigali. Jeanette decided to pursue medicine and surgery to aid those in her community. After graduating, Jeanette plans to work as a doctor on health problems such as non-communicable diseases, neglected tropical diseases and community acquired diseases like tuberculosis, which are a major concern in Rwanda.
Pictured here, is Jeanette working on one of her many community service projects in Gasabo district of Rwanda. She assisted in cultivating mushrooms for community members and helped educate and promote a balanced diet. Jeanette is a great example of how WMI Scholars engage and give back to their communities through service projects. Keep up the great work!

WMI Scholar, Isata Bah, chose to study medicine because of her mother, who suffered from diabetes and hypertension for 10 years before she passed. Her condition had a significant impact on Isata’s family and throughout her mother’s illness, she accompanied her on her frequent hospital visits.
Isata’s career goals include going on to specialize in internal medicine/endocrinology. Eventually, she would like to create a diabetic home for the elderly and financially disadvantaged people to receive consistent and reliable medical care.

Dr. Clarisse Iradukunda is a WMI Graduate Scholar who received a Bachelor of General Medicine and Surgery from the University of Rwanda in 2022 and is now creating meaningful change in her community.
With initial support from a WMI Community Development Grant, her post-graduate project, the She Can Dream Again program, raises mental health awareness, diagnoses and provides possible treatment for mental health disorders to vulnerable single mothers between the ages of 15-25.
Since implementing her community project earlier this year, Dr. Iradukunda has already been able to create awareness and screening to 51 single mothers in the region.

Egide Dushimirimana is a WMI Graduate Scholar with a degree in dental surgery from the University of Rwanda. With grant funding from WMI, his community development project, Oral Health Matters, targets the underserved population in Rwanda’s rural areas which are underserved in almost all fields and dental problems are substantial.
He has demonstrated oral hygiene and introduced interventions such as tooth-brushing and dental check-ups to over 2,800 direct beneficiaries. He also started a health club where 135 students continue to receive empowerment and more one-on-one dental hygiene education. Egide envisions to register his organization as a community-based organization, apply for grant funding and partner with other stakeholders to expand his activities.
